I'm looking for speakers to go with the Arcam cd73t and a65+ amp. And I'm having difficulty deciding which sound I could live with because each has its merits: the Monitor Audio Silver S1 is so tight, detailed and forward it makes Coltrane soar, and Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day' powerful but almost so detailed I'm worried that all those separate instruments might become distracting. The Dynaudio Audience 42 is also highly detailed yet the instruments seem to hang together, but the base is looser, not as fast as the MA - but warmer. Originally I had favoured the Mission M51s until, after reading reviews, I began to fret about a lack of refinement - but I think now the sound I liked in the Missions is what I get in the Dynaudios with more detailed top end. Then the B&W 602 s3s: great room filling and bassy sound but had to be turned up high to get best results.

And I wanted more from the top end in Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' from them. After reading so many worshipful reviews I was recently on a Quad finding mission. I'm going with the Arcams because they are the most detailed, transparent, and broadest soundstage I've tried at my budget (and they're now within my budget because of the deals on here in Australia). About 6-8months later i got the upgrade bug so this time I demoed the s1 against high end standmount speakers none were under £925 the MA being £300. The makes were dynaudio,audiovecter and PMC and again the MA won hands down. To me it is the metal drivers they are so tight and detailed no speaker they put in front of me could beat that sound I was gettting from the MA s1's. Im thinking of getting the s8's now. I had the MA Silver S1s on the end of an Arcam Alpha 7SE CD player, and an Alpha 5+ amp (40wpc like the A65+) and they sounded very good indeed. Fast, excellent bass and massive amounts of detail.
